Hosier Daddy Cabernet ~ BOODEAUX vineyards has twenty seven hundered vines and averages two and one half tons per acre. The quality of this Napa Valley hand-made wine speaks for itself. If you love cabernet, you should try some BOODEAUX! Scott Becker is one of those winemakers that doesn't produce very much wine and the wine he does produce doesn't last very long. Seeing the wine industry in the Napa Valley transform poor farmers into gentlemen farmers, in 1997 he purchased 20 acres Capel Valley (just over the hill from Lake Hennessey) in which 3.5 planted to Cabernet and half an acre planted to Primitivo. With his trusty companion, Boodeaux (Rhodesian ridgeback) and the sage advice of Jeff Smith of Dusinberre Cellars & Bob Milat of Milat Vineyards, he has released his first wines. Scott Becker and his canine companion Boo, pioneered Boodeaux Vineyards in 1997. The vineyard lies in the eastern Napa Valley in the Capell region. Nobody had ever planted in the narrow northern Capell area. Numerous people warned him that he was in a severe micro climate. Stagnet air at seven hundred feet makes for temperatures in the teens in the winter and well over one hundred in the summer. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay would never do well there. Planting the correct varietals for the region was essential. Cabernet Sauvignon was planted initially.

Often from Boodeaux Vineyards you can watch fog pouring over Atlas Peak ridge in the morning. It evaporates almost immideately. Not getting the unwanted moisture, Boodeaux Vineyards has little problem with powdery mildew, the most prolific disease of the grapevine. It turned out the Capell micro climate had numerous advatages. The soil is excellent clay loam that drains suprisingly well.

Later, Primitivo, an Italian clone of Zinfandel was determined to be suitable. This turned out to be a fortuitus choice. The 2004 Primitivo is nothing short of spectacular. In 2004 Scott also bought some grapes of a little known varietal called Charbono from a grower/friend in Calistoga. He made a couple of barrels of homemade wine for fun. Much to his horror, the Charbono turned out to be one of the finest wines he had ever made. Because it was not bonded, it could not be sold! His family was delighted though.

Scott and Boo immediately set to planting Charbono which should do well in Capell as it only ripens well in hotter regions. 2008 will be the first harvest of Charbono.

BOODEAUX vineyards was planted in 1997 in the Capell region of Napa. Capell is a narrow valley just a few hundred yards wide at seven hundered feet altitude. The soil is a clay loam and the region is hot, generally over ninety five degrees in the vineyard.
